"Couldn't be happier with the kitchen update job Pzazz did for us. We are very, very happy with the customer service and professionalism we received from Pzazz at all times on their job for us -- before and during their quote, while they were doing the work, and after the job. Notably, we found Rudy (owner manager), and his building and subcontractor crews very good to deal with -- from turning up on time, being personable, being helpful with their advice, and being good at explaining the steps in the process (what happens next, who's turning up when, etc). Rudy's follow-up visit after the job was also greatly appreciated. We would definitely remember and engage Pzazz again for any future renovation needs."

"Gavin Desmond GARDENER BUILDERS LIMITED, trades under Pzazz Builders, SHOULD NOT be trusted. He mis-quoted a job, then ceased contact with us, sent in his son Nick, who refused to deal with the issues created, was rude and repugnant, then left all communication to his daughter, April, who didn't seem to understand what was and wasn't completed, then threatened debt collectors using poorly structured grammar to recover an invented invoice. Overall the completed work was reasonable but not to the specifications quoted. A five day job lasted eight weeks, dealings with Pzazz/Aztec have been highly questionable, and it transpires Gavin Gardener has been trespassed from a number of properties in Darfield. He is certainly not welcome in Oxford again....DO NOT TRUST"

"Fix-It/Pzazz/Aztec - should not be trusted. Stupidly we trusted them to work to a fixed price contract which ended up with him taking us to the small claims court for work they did outside of the contract. We did not at any stage throughout the build see anything in writing to amend the contract or the price. The owner, who no doubt has been through the process so many times before that he won the case. He suggested to us to 'take out a loan or a credit card to pay for him as otherwise the debt collectors would be in to take away our chattels, charming!

I would highly suggest you stay well clear of this man as he has a total disregard for anyone and is only on the look out for himself

"We initially started our extension with another company and due to their unreliability we let them go and employed Fixit/ Aztec.
Rudy arrived very positive and outline what was needed to finish the project, he supplied a timeline and we agreed to a fixed price quote.
The first signs of things falling off the tracks was when it came time to complete the roof the roofer was contacted and was informed that they would not be on site for at least 6 weeks which did not fall into the 14 working day time line supplied.

During the build Rudy made the decision that an existing wall which was intended to be used was unsuitable due to one reason or another and without consultation built over it instead of informing us and possibly replacing it given it was an existing structural wall.

When it came time to pay up for a finished job we received an extra bill for work Rudy deemed as "extra" , even though we had a fixed price quote and no PC sums. We had, had no correspondence outlining the additional costs as stated in his own terms of sale agreement clause 5 and is continuing to argue.

Rudy and his company try to act as project managers organizing sub contractors. They fail with this as they do nothing else but hire them.

I would have used Rudy again as a building contractor if he had been up front with all extra costs and not dumping it on us at the end of the job.

I would not use Rudy again now, If you choose to do so make sure there are NO PC sums, as we feel he failed to quote correctly and now is trying make up the loss.

    Russell responded:
"I would like to acknowledge that aspects of the communication on this job were not as well handled as they could, or should, have been. A detailed record of any variations requested or required to the original project is prescribed in our processes and in this instance whilst these extra’s/changes were discussed our total processes were not fully followed resulting in the surprise that Jason refers to. An attempt was made to negotiate a solution which was unsuccessful so it was decided to file a claim with the Disputes Resolution Tribunal to get an independent resolution. Whilst the tribunal found substantively (80%) in our favour this does not in any way mitigate the inconvenience and anguish that Jason and his family endured and for this I extend a public and sincere apology. Every effort will be made to ensure such a situation does not occur again. Russell Poole – Managing Director Nuovo Group Ltd t/a Fix It Building Services and Pzazz Building"

"I have used Fix It and Pzazz several times over the past 8 years for a number of major and minor renovation projects. I keep going back to Rudy and his team because I find them totally trustworthy, customer focused and excellent value for money. The quality of the work they so is tops, Rudy has the ability to understand your needs and your vision for what you are trying to achieve. An example of this was a major renovation to my home where I added an art studio. Rudy understood my vision and saw exactly what I wanted to achieve, he worked to my budget and the quality of workmanship was above my expectations. He made suggestions to save me money and that meant that he wasn't out to make a buck out me of me but that he truly cared about the end product and about my needs. Another example was last year when I had my whole front garden redone. I also had some renovations fine in my kitchen and ensuite bathroom, all to a high standard, within budget and timeframes. His team delivered exactly what I had envisaged. I find Rudy and engaging and genuine person to deal with, who will tell you honestly if you have "champagne taste and beer budget" . Neighbors have now commissioned work from him because of the great job they did on my property. I would totally recommend Fix It and Pzazz and Rudy and his team."

"This builder cannot be trusted, we met him at the Wellington Home Show and he seemed very helpful. He made suggestions as to how the job (a deck for a conservatory and spa) could be done. We relied on his apparent expertise and were throughly dissappointed, we had to hassle him to finish the job properly. It then turned out that we needed consent which we were unable to get as the foundations were never inspected and as it turned out the deck did not comply for a consent. He then told us "The deck was built with no plans supplied by client. The deck is only 450mm high and does not require a Building Consent. We knew it was for a conservatory and future spa and extra piles were used to carry this weight. There was a concrete path running under and piles were placed on this to help carry the load." Well the engineers report provided comfirmation that the job was not as required. Please please if you need any work done dont use this man or his company as it is likely to only end in more cost for you and tears!"

"We contracted Rudy under another building name of "Fix it Builders". My impression was quite positive.

We are a young couple who had only just enough money to install a new kitchen. Rudy outlined where we could save money on the process, such as conducting some of the demolition ourselves, doing the painting ourselves and handling all the cleaning up. The overall quote for the project we felt was competitive. We intend to have Rudy quote again when we do up our bathroom in the future.

Overall the work was completed to an acceptable standard. We have not had to enter into any further remedial work since that couldn't be completed very easily by myself (such as re-sticking a kickboard).

The job ran a couple of days longer than Rudy indicated, but it was in the run up to Christmas.

If I was to identify areas for improvement, it would be in communication. We were not always aware if a tradesperson was coming the next day or not. But again...it was the run up to Christmas.

"In summary, we would advise you to steer well clear of this builder. He is a dishonest, manipulative, difficult tradesman with little integrity or professionalism. During our experience he demonstrated to us a lack of loyalty not only to his clients, but to his subcontractors and staff also. He took little or no responsibility for his actions despite obvious evidence and we were forced to deal through our lawyers for a period. This will seem very harsh, but if you would like (a very summarised version of our story below) you may begin to understand.

    Here is how it happened.

Building and renovating is often a very stressful time but tradesman can make it or break it. My partner and I purchased a property that required major renovations. We were relocating the kitchen and bathroom, knocking down a couple of walls and moving some exterior windows and doors and building a 60m2 deck. We found Rudy van Vlerken at the Wellington home show.

We were very new to this scene and when Rudy provided a fixed contract for the renovations with a duration of 3-4 weeks (such little time!!) we signed the dotted line. Having managed projects in the past, I tried to ensure all loose ends were tied up and everything up front was documented back to Rudy in email or letter form.

We had agreed to a process in which the house was to be completed to enable us to continue living there. When his builders arrived (late), immediately they said the job was likely to be 7-8 weeks (all going well) - that was ok, we could see it was a big job. The scope was also extended slightly with 2 extra rooms requiring re-gibing but no further structural work.

Two weeks into the contract, things were not progressing well. In hindsight, we should definitely have moved out of the house but on Rudy's advice up front, it wasn't going to be a problem. The process which we had discussed originally went out the window in a matter of days. We were without windows, for weeks. All product such as internal doors, bifolds, windows had been ordered incorrectly. The wrong glass was supplied in most cases. The large bifold door was back to front and the internal doors were the wrong profile.

We arrived home one day to find our shower ripped out and gone with no consultation - we were without this for 7 weeks! (We had negotiated this step and were told we would be without it for a maximum of 2 days). We often had no water or lights - all of which could have been prevented. We were without a kitchen for near 2.5 months. We had windows installed without flashing for 6 weeks or more with the weather pouring in. Internal gib was being applied with no exterior protection (not even building paper in some instances!). There was no regard taken for the fact that we were still living in the house, they refused to clean up after themselves, inside or out.

Rudy reneged on so many of his promises. If we did not have everything documented up front we would have been in serious trouble. However dealing with the stress of an abrupt and difficult man trying to see reason in his original negotiations was more than difficult.

He sent is apprentice son to install our $20k kitchen who damaged our new kitchen floor, new fridge and glued down the bench top out of level (8mm drop) and more than 2mm difference in the join. In some parts the bench was not even supported by the units! We had third parties involved in conflict resolution, who ended up writing letters that backed our concerns when Rudy was telling us the service we had received was more than adequate and still he was not at fault.

The work in the end was completed after 5 and a half months at considerably more cost to us and with (I expect) considerable loss on his part. Neither party experienced any success through the transaction. There is much we ourselves would do differently if we were ever in a situation similar again as I can easily say, some things we handled badly - but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

"Right from the start, communication lines were open between our whanau and Rudy. He gave us frank advice about our project which we trusted and were rewarded by in the end. He was willing to compromise on all aspects and made allowances for us when and where we were able to supply our own materials and expertise. The budgets given were realistic and there was minimal overlapping. An awesome guy to work with."
