"In 2008 I became the owner of a 100 year old villa requiring major renovation and new build. A long time personal friend referred me to John Anderson (Architect).

Having outlined my thoughts to John on what I wanted, I felt John and I could work together to achieve the best result and a home I would be proud to own and live in.

In August 2010 I moved into my new home home.

I would have no hesitation in recommending John Anderson to future clients.

At all times John communicated with me in a professional manner including the difficult resource consent process and heritage requirements and all aspects of the job.

John also worked well with the builder on this project, who was also experienced in villa renovation. I am delighted with the result.

"John Anderson, my brother in law has planned our house in Sumner, Christchurch on a hill overlooking the sea. The house we wanted had to have an Italian flavour because I am Italian and my husband was also a lover of Italy having lived there for ten years. We wanted a solid house, not on poles, with concrete floors, Oamaru stone or rocks on the outside, a simple and timeless design.

The first stage of the planning started with a double garage and a couple of rooms and a bathroom underneath.

The next stage was to build the house on the opposite side of the hill.

We soon realised we did not have enough money to carry on with the next stage, so together with John it was decided to change the use of the garage:

It became a beautiful living room!

A couple of years later, John planned the second stage of the house, which was to build a floor on top of “the garage”, with stunning views of the sea, bedroom, bathroom and a lovely sitting room.

Our house has been completed some years ago, and we have been living in it, very happily.

From my description, it is possible to think that, adding and changing the original brief, would not have had a positive result on the overall house.

In fact it is the opposite!

The house is situated right on a cliff edge, close to a stunning public track that goes to Taylor’s Mistake beach that a lot of people use every day. Our house has been admired for years by these passers-by, with a number of them knocking at our door to compliment us for its style and design.

John has done a great job for us: his professional manner, creativity and vision have been really appreciated, not only for our own project.

We have been lucky to follow John’s other projects with great interest and admiration.

"In 2002 we engaged John Anderson to design and renovate our (old) bungalow in Grey Lynn. We particularly needed more space. John designed a beautiful house, keeping the character of the building in tact whilst presenting us with stylish, contemporary spaces perfect for our family’s needs.

Together we worked through design options and John was amazingly thorough to work with and communicated well throughout the whole process of the design and build. Budget was a consideration and we were grateful that John understood our needs whilst at all times giving us the best possible solutions to fit our budget. He is totally professional in his manner and approach, and as clients we knew exactly what to expect and when.

A few years later we added a 2 room bathroom studio in our back yard – a building which John also designed.

This studio is wonderful, multifunctional and has completed our home and enhanced our living 100 percent.

And now in 2010 we have once again commisioned John to design and oversee the build of a holiday house in Rarotonga. Budget has been a big consideration all the way on this project and he has been understanding of this, whilst maintaining the integrity and style of the building that we all want. We communicate regulary on this project and John is clear and presise on the needs and structure of this build. We are working to a very tight time frame and there is no problem dealing with him on this basis.

For us John offers great value for money, not only with regards to the fees but also in the overall project.

The outcome for us is a fantastic home and space that we love to be in. Not too mention ongoing positive feedback from people who come in to the house.

"John Anderson successfully transformed our house in Herne Bay from a somewhat closed in villa on a sloping section to a light and welcoming home and garden which we’ve now enjoyed for 25 years.
This was no easy task. Our ideas well exceeded our budget, so John went back to his drawing board several times to come up with something which matched our wants with our wallets.
The end result is superb, with a style and design (and practicality) which we enjoy every day.
The house itself opens out to the back garden of native trees and plants which includes the best laundry and tool shed we’ve ever seen. All this thanks to John’s architectural, landscaping and botanical skills.

John is great to deal with, and for us has well exceeded our expectations in producing appropriate and stylish designs. We would happily recommend him to others.

"We engaged John to draw up plans for a renovation and extension to our existing early 1930s two story bungalow. We wanted a large designer kitchen that would remain in keeping with the style and era of the house but provide all the mod cons which come with today\'s living.
Very importantly we also wanted good indoor/outdoor flow.

John was renowned for his flare and his passion in creating modern and innovative designs. However he stuck diligently to our requirements and the result was an amazing kitchen. It is now over 4 years old but it still gets heaps of praise. It works superbly and looks stunning. I still believe it worthy as a feature in NZ House & Garden!

John managed this remotely as we live in Wellington. He corrdinated the builder, the roofer and the engineer and the project was completed on schedule and with no surprises.

It was the first time for us engaging an architect. Our experience with John as a project manager and as an architect was so good and the results so stunning that we wouldn\'t hesitate to engage him again

"We have used the services of architect, John Anderson since the mid 1980’s for both commercial and residential projects. John has designed and overseen numerous retail fit outs as well as three major residential renovations and refurbishments. John has also been employed by us to obtain the necessary resource and building consents for work in which he was involved, including a protracted and complex redesign and application to Auckland City Council resulting from land acquisition under the Public Works Act.

John has always acted for us in a professional manner. His attention to detail and skill at developing an initial brief through to project completion have always met our expectations. We would use John’s services in the future and recommend him to prospective clients.

"15 months, unexpected fees and complete frustration later, we finally have building consent. I thought the council was the hurdle! I knew what renovations I wanted but required specialist knowledge for Res 1 resource consent, then weather-tightness and fixings expertise for building consent. After 12 months delay with neighbours and errors on plans we got resource consent. Prior to this we agreed a sum for building consent drawings, on the high side but John said his fees were higher to provide more drawings and lessen the chance of council rejection. Well they rejected them, 28 items in fact, mostly in the areas I had required expertise, then he refused to admit fault, demanded more money and then refused to do any further work at all. I then had to find someone else to help complete them, no small task, a cost for which I feel John should pay.

We went to John because he knew the house which should have made the process simpler, but do your homework, check out previous jobs and talk to ex clients about time management and knowledge. If I?d talked to me first, this whole saga would never have gone the way it did.
